With its missions, the university has set its vision to be National Center of Excellence in Leadership Development and Institution building by 2035. A core element associated both its mission and vision is the University’s Motto: Inspiring excellence. It seems important to note here that the mission, vision, and motto of the university are all targeting at a new and pragmatic journey to excellence in training, education, consultancy, research, and community services which ultimately results in efficiency and effectiveness in leadership development and institution building both at regional and national levels.

In successfully executing its missions, the University has been particularly focused to providing short term trainings to leaders and professionals. The short term training programs have two modalities. The first modalities is a conventional one in which leaders and professionals take trainings on selected and well-designed topics for a few days, which may usually take one up to ten days. In the conventional modality, the University has already designed and updated several lists of training topics; the list actually goes to more than 50. In this case, institutions, be it public or private, are expected to book training programs at their convenient time so that the trainings can be given at the university’s campus via its well-trained training specialists, and well organized and furnished training rooms, and in its very spacious green and attractive training campus. The university’s campus, located adjacent to the Blue Nile River, is the most suitable training space which perhaps can be taken as the first choice at both regional and national levels. The second modality of our short term training is on certification programs, which may take from two to four months. In the certification modality, separate training syllabuses are prepared on policy literacy, leadership and governance, diplomacy, security, politics, urban leadership, project management, health leadership, tourism leadership, agricultural leadership and rural transformation, industry leadership, educational leadership, digital literacy, and leadership in an era of artificial intelligence. The duration of the certification programs may vary from two to four months depending on the depth and width of the contents in the syllabus. The modality of the training is mostly online, and may also involve face to face engagements depending on the needs of the trainees. At the end of the training for the certification programs, trainees are supposed to be awarded an advanced diploma certificate on the specific syllabus they are trained for. The certification modality in particular is highly supposed to make a shift in the leadership development of the region as the training provides foundational knowledge, skills and values for the trainees which they can successfully apply in leading their respective sectors.

Consultancy services, on the other hand, are being provided targeting at leadership development and institution building related interventions. Full time well- trained consultants are appointed at the university on permanent basis so that any institution or individual requiring consultancies of any type and scope are most welcomed be it inside or outside of the campus. So far, consultancy services are being provided on the areas of business process reengineering related activities; balanced score card activities; kaizen related interventions; institutional reform initiatives; development of organizational structures, policies and manuals; organizational leadership and institutional development initiatives, organizational productivity interventions, and other sectorial interventions which ultimately contributes to maximizing productivity at individual and institutional levels. In most cases, the consultancy initiatives emanate from our research outputs. The research wing of the University is mandated to undertake problem solving researches targeted at solving problems related to leadership [p development and institution building. That is, the university’s research staff usually identifies research thematic areas targeting the region’s core leadership development and institution building demands; and once the research findings are identified in our research process, the University translates the findings in to consultancy services so that interventions can be made based on the research findings. In this case, both the consultancy and the research services can be either supply driven or demand driven, and the University is all the time ready in responding to the research and consultancy demands form any corner and at any scope.

With an informed intention to make a critical shift in the human capital development of the region in particular, and the country at large, the University is also providing long term education programs at Masters and PhD levels in public policy and leadership, political economy, peace and security, peace and development, project management, law and economics, urban leadership, and health leadership. This core function of the university has been framed with a strong belief that education made us what we are! A country’s development largely rests on the level of educational investment made on human capital development, and thereby, the availability of the productive human capital which the country is able to form through education. In this regard, the level of productivity of the available human capital determines the country’s path to prosperity.

Human capital could also take different forms and levels. By and large, leaders, as parts of human capital, take the lion’s share in determining the countries’ path to success. Those countries that have had strong leaders are able to make sustainable developments. That is, leaders make a difference on the overall development paths of countries. The more we make investments on leadership development, the more opportunities we are likely to have for growth and prosperity. That is why we usually say organizations are reflections of the leaders who are leading them, and a similar analogy would work for a country. It is with this conviction and determination that Amhara Region State University is striving to take a strong part in the leadership development efforts of the region in particular and the country at large through its short- and long-term leadership training programs and responsive institutional platforms. So, let us join hands and maximize for our contribution for the region, and thereby, the country via Amhara Region State University, having a new digital age motto of Inspiring Excellence.

Amahara Region State University: Inspiring Excellence !!!

Mateb Tafere Gedifew(PhD)

Associate Professor in Education Policy and Leadership

President, Amhara Region State University

Email:matebetafere@yahoo.com
Phone:+251911862252

Message from the president Amhara Region State University, established by the Amhara National Regional State in 2025, is one of […]

["post-1751","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
